Protocol for PET

Preparation for PET scan is very easy.

  • 24 hours before scan, you go on a low-carb diet and avoid carbohydrates and sugars as much as possible.
  • 24 hours before scan avoid any strenuous exercise exercise.
  • 6 hours before scan do not eat, but do drink plenty of water and take all medications.
  • If you are diabetic, take your oral medications. If you are on insulin, discuss this with us well in advance of the test.
  • On the morning of the scan, arrive at our center with copies of any CT or MRI scans performed at another facility which show the problem area.

Julie Bullen, RT, CNMT,
Certified PET Technologist

  • Our PET technologist, Julie Bullen, will fully explain the procedure to you. Ms. Bullen is a Registered X-ray Technologist (RT) and a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) and is also Certified in PET.
  • She will check your blood sugar with a finger stick.
  • If your blood sugar is less than 200, she will proceed.
  • She will administer to you an IV injection of sugar, labeled with a radioactive isotope, known as FDG.
  • You will then relax in our lounger for an hour, while the sugar tagged with the isotope circulates in your body.
  • Then you will lie down on the scanner bed and relax while the PET scanner does its thing (for about 35 minutes) and scans your torso.
  • Afterward the scanner computer will generate the wonderful 3d and cross sectional images that will identify and localize any areas which may have high metabolic activity.
  • We will have the results of your PET scan very quickly, usually within 48 hours, and communicate with your doctor.
  • After the scan is finished, you are free to leave and go about your normal activities. Because you will still have some residual radioactivity in your body, you should avoid close contact with children or pregnant women for the rest of the day.
