             As accurate as traditional colonoscopy

Demonstration of Patient in Position in CT Scanner Used for Virtual Colonoscopy

CT Scan of Colon Filled With Air

Did you know that...?

  • Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer related deaths in the US for men and women
  • Colorectal cancer is one of the most successfully treated cancers if caught early
  • Eighty-five (85%) percent of patients who need colonoscopy screening will refuse conventional colonoscopy because of fear of anesthesia and fear of complications (The risk of colon perforation is 1:500 to 1:1000).  Virtual CT colonoscopy provides an effective and safe alternative to conventional colonoscopy, requires no anesthesia and costs about half the price.
  • Kentucky commercial insurance companies are now required to reimburse for Screening Virtual Colonoscopy, just as they would for any colon cancer screening test recommended by the American Cancer Society. (Medicare and Medicaid do not yet routinely cover for Screening Virtual Colonoscopy except in some cases.)

Virtual Colonoscopy is now available at Lexington Diagnostic Center

Using our high speed, Multislice CT, this procedure has been developed and proven effective and safe and is used routinely in several prominent hospitals and medical centers.  Dr. Perry J. Pickhardt and others reported in the New England Journal of Medicine on December 4, 2003, a study of 1233 patients undergoing both virtual colonoscopy and optical (conventional) colonoscopy.  This study found that virtual colonoscopy is as good as optical colonoscopy for the detection of clinically relevant lesions.

In October 2008 the American College of Radiology Imaging Network Published results from their National CT Colonography trial that indicated that CT Colonography (virtual CT colonoscopy) accuracy was comparable to that of optical colonoscopy for the detection of clinically significant colorectal polyps.

Cardiac Calcium Score
No injection required
More accurace predictor than cholesterol test
Good predictor for risk of stroke

Pink Areas Demonstrate Calcium in Coronary Arteries of Heart

Did you Know that.....

  • Over 33% of all Americans who have a heart attack show no symptoms beforehand?
  • 85% of sudden heart attacks may be prevented if the conditions that lead to the attack are diagnosed early enough to prescribe treatment?

  • Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in most industrialized nations?

  • Coronary artery disease claims more lives than lung, colon, prostate and breast cancer combined?

  • Cardiac calcium scoring is at least ten times more powerful a predictor of acute episodes due to coronary artery disesase than is cholesterol screening?

  • 45% of all heart attacks occur in people under the age of 65?

  • 44% of women who have heart attacks die within a year after the attack?

  • Women are 10 times more likely to die of heart disease than of breast cancer?
  • Heart disease can be reversed if it is detected early enough?

What are the Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease & Heart Attack?

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High Cholesterol
  • Family History of Heart Disease
  • Smoking
  • Sedentary Life Style
  • Overweight by 20% or more
  • High stress lifestyle
  • Men over 40 years old and
  • Women over 50 years old

This painless, safe, and accurate one minute test can tell whether or not you are at risk for heart attack.

By evaluating  and measuring the calcium build up in your coronary arteries, we can calculate your risk of heart attack, and give you the opportunity to seek treatment and make appropriate life-style changes.... and give you peace of mind that you are now in charge of your health.

How is Cardiac Calcium Scoring performed?

You will be asked to lie down on your back and will be scanned in our new high-speed CAT Scanner. A special scan is taken of your heart during one breath hold, lasting about 20 seconds.  This procedure requires no injections, treadmills or any other preparation.

Lung Cancer Screening
More Sensitive than Chest X-ray
Gives a free look at other chest structures
           Minimal x-ray exposure

New National Cancer Institute Study Shows CT Scan to be better than Chest X-ray for Lung Cancer Screening

A huge NCI study was in process to settle the long debate about screening for lung cancer with low dose spiral CT as opposed to Chest X-Ray.  This study was terminated early because of significant findings that favored the use of CT scans.

According to NPR News in November 2010, the “The massive National Lung Screening Trial enrolled 53,000 current or former smokers to try to settle the debate. It found 20 percent fewer deaths from lung cancer among those screened with spiral CTs than among those given chest X-rays, the NCI said Thursday, a difference significant enough that it ended the study early.” *

Examples of Our Findings on Lung Cancer Screening CT

Multiple Lung Bullae (Cysts)

Small Lung Tumor

Did you Know that.....

  • Kentuckians have the highest rate of death from lung cancer in the US?

  • Most Lung Cancers cause no symptoms until they are too large to be successfully treated?

  • Tobacco smokers have a much larger incidence of Lung Cancer than nonsmokers?

  • Lung Cancer can be successfully treated if it is detected early enough?

What are the Risk Factors for Lung Cancer?

  • Family History of Cancer
  • Smoker
  • Work in Mining
  • Exposure to Asbestos

This painless, safe, and accurate one minute test can tell you whether or not you have lung cancer and other serious conditions of the lung and chest.  You are a candidate for Lung Cancer Screening CT if you meet of the following criteria:

  • You are 50 years or older or
  • You have a 10 pack year history of smoking (1 pack a day for 10 years or 2 packs a day for 5 years, etc.)

Computed tomography (CT) is a computerized x-ray procedure designed to visualize  structures inside the body. It is a common diagnostic tool used by physicians to look inside the chest in patients with signs of symptoms of lung disease. Lung CT is one of the best tests available for finding lung cancer.

PLEASE NOTE THAT Screening CT examinations are not intended to take the place of your usual routine doctor's evaluations, but  rather to give you and your doctor additional information on which to base lifestyle change and treatment decisions. ALSO NOTE: Because this is a screening test for patients without symptoms, it usually is not covered by insurance.  However, if you are having symptoms of heart or lung disease, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, chronic cough, or coughing blood, or if you are having bowel,  colon bleeding or changes in your bowl habits or other digestive problems, contact your doctor immediately for an evaluation.
