Who is Eligible for Virtual Colonoscopy? Patients who are eligible for traditional flexible colonoscopy, including patients age 50 or older, (or over age 40 if there is a family history of colon cancer) are appropriate for Virtual Colonoscopy. We recommend a repeat Virtual Colonoscopy every 5 years for screening.
What are the Contraindications for Virtual Colonoscopy? Patients who have had a total hip replacement cannot be scanned because of the metal in the hip replacement. Patients who have active Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, a history of previous bowel perforation, or severe abdominal pain and discomfort on the day of exam are not appropriate for Virtual Colonoscopy. More contraindications.
What Preparation is Necessary for the Exam? We recommend the Fleet® prep kit #1 (see below). This is contraindicated for those patients with heart, renal, and liver disease and in patients on a low sodium diet and in patients with megacolon. For patients on low sodium diet, LoSo® magnesium citrate prep is recommended. For other contraindicated patients, consult your doctor who may consider the Golytely® prep.

Diabetics on insulin should consult their doctor for medication and meal instructions. Patients should avoid Celebrex, Vioxx, aspirin, and iron-containing pills from the day before until after the exam. Take all other meds with small sips of water. More considerations.
